- Gynecological Examinations: For ultrasound examinations of the uterus and its appendages, retain urine in the bladder beforehand. Precautions for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
What is Painless Gastrointestinal Endoscopy?
Painless gastrointestinal endoscopy refers to a technique where a small amount of short-acting sedative and analgesic drugs are administered intravenously during the procedure. This allows the patient to undergo the examination in a state of light sleep, experiencing no pain or discomfort and retaining no memory of the procedure. At the end of the examination, due to the short half-life of the drugs, the sedative effects wear off quickly, and the patient regains consciousness rapidly. Painless gastrointestinal endoscopy is very safe when performed in a well-equipped medical center.
Who Needs a Gastroscopy?
- Individuals suspected of having esophageal, gastric, or duodenal diseases who have not been definitively diagnosed through comprehensive examinations.
- Those experiencing retrosternal pain, burning sensation, or difficulty swallowing, suspected of having esophageal conditions.
- Patients with peptic ulcers requiring gastroscopy to monitor healing and differentiate between benign and malignant conditions.
- Individuals undergoing screening for gastric or esophageal cancer, requiring gastroscopic treatment and timely follow-up.
- Those with upper gastrointestinal polyps or protruding lesions, needing gastroscopic treatment and regular follow-up.
- Patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding, to identify the source of bleeding and facilitate prompt and appropriate treatment.
- Individuals with chronic upper gastrointestinal inflammation, such as chronic gastritis, who may require repeated gastroscopy for treatment and follow-up.
- Patients who have undergone gastric surgery and need periodic gastroscopy for follow-up.
- People over 40 years old, recommended to undergo gastroscopy annually.
Who Needs a Gastroscopy?
- Individuals experiencing recurrent pain in the middle or lower abdomen, with unexplained changes in bowel habits (increased or decreased frequency).
- Those with symptoms such as rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, or anemia.
- People with recurrent irregular bowel movements, bloating, or persistently dry or loose stools that do not respond to treatment.
- Individuals over 40 years old with a family history of colorectal cancer.
- Those with repeatedly positive fecal occult blood tests during routine physical examinations.
Painless Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Procedure:
1、Doctor’s Assessment: The doctor evaluates whether the patient is suitable for painless gastrointestinal endoscopy and discusses related risks. If the patient is deemed suitable, the doctor confirms the appointment time for the procedure, and the patient takes home the prescribed laxative. If the patient is not suitable for painless gastrointestinal endoscopy, the patient will need to pay HKD 2,230 for the other health check items in this package, and the remaining difference will be refunded.
2、Examination Process: The patient must arrive on time for the scheduled appointment. The afternoon before the examination, a nurse from the medical center will call to confirm the appointment time and provide relevant precautions.
1. Gastroscopy
- Anesthesia: The patient is injected with anesthesia and undergoes the procedure after falling asleep.
- Procedure: The endoscope is inserted through the mouth, passing through the esophagus and stomach, into the duodenum for examination.
- Duration: The entire process takes approximately 10–20 minutes.
2. Colonoscopy
- Anesthesia: The patient is injected with anesthesia and undergoes the procedure after falling asleep.
- Procedure: The endoscope is inserted through the anus to carefully examine the large intestine.
- Duration: The entire process takes approximately 15–30 minutes.
3. Explanation of Report by Doctor
The final price of the gastrointestinal endoscopy examination will be determined based on the results of the examination. If additional tests or treatments, such as complex procedures, are required during the gastrointestinal endoscopy, the doctor will typically proceed with the necessary interventions for your health. Precautions for Gastroscopy
1、Patients should fast for 8 hours and refrain from drinking for 4 hours before the examination.
2、During the examination, try to relax and avoid excessive nervousness. Lie on your left side with legs slightly bent, and follow the instructions of the doctor or nurse.
3、After the examination, spit out saliva. Due to throat anesthesia, you may feel a foreign body sensation in the throat. Avoid vigorous coughing to prevent damage to the throat mucosa. You may use lozenges or rinse with diluted saltwater to relieve discomfort.
4、You may drink water 2 hours after the examination to avoid choking or aspiration. If a biopsy was performed, consume cool or lukewarm semi-liquid or soft foods for one day after the 2-hour mark to prevent rough foods from rubbing against the gastric mucosa and causing bleeding.
5、Within 24 hours after the examination, do not drive, avoid smoking and alcohol, refrain from intense exercise, avoid making major decisions, and ensure adequate rest.
6、After polyp removal, fast for 4-6 hours and consume only liquids for 24 hours (the doctor will provide specific instructions based on your condition).
Precautions for Colonoscopy
1、Carefully read the "Dietary Guidelines and Instructions for Taking Oral Laxatives Before Colonoscopy" (see details below).

4、After the examination, if you feel abdominal bloating, perform squatting movements to help expel gas.
5、If there is no discomfort after the examination, you may resume a normal diet. If a biopsy was performed, consume a liquid or low-residue, non-gas-producing diet for 1-2 days, followed by soft foods for 3 days. Maintain smooth and soft bowel movements to avoid bleeding from the biopsy site.
6、Within 24 hours after the examination, do not drive, avoid smoking and alcohol, refrain from intense exercise, avoid making major decisions, and ensure adequate rest.
7、After polyp removal, fast for 4-6 hours and consume only liquids for 24 hours (the doctor will provide specific instructions based on your condition).
